China's support to Russia/ Stoltenberg: We are talking about sanctions

Head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg

The head of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, has declared that China must face consequences for supporting Russia's war in Ukraine.

Jens Stoltenberg said Beijing is playing both ways by supporting Russia's war effort and also trying to preserve relations with European allies.

"This cannot work in the long term," Stoltenberg told BBC News during a visit to Washington.

Stoltenberg said there was an ongoing conversation about possible sanctions for China's support of Russia.

He said that China is sharing a lot of technology, microelectronics, which are key for Russia to build missiles, weapons that it uses against Ukraine.

"At some stage, we have to consider some kind of economic cost if China does not change its behavior," Stoltenberg said.

Beijing is under sanctions for its support of Russia. The US announced restrictions that would target about 20 firms based in China and Hong Kong./ CNA
