Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved his war cabinet, just over a week after the departure of centrist opposition leader Benny Gantz and his ally Gadi Eisenkot.

Israeli media reports that sensitive issues surrounding the war with Hamas in Gaza will now be discussed by a smaller forum.

"The war cabinet was in the coalition agreement with Gantz at his request. "Once Gantz is gone, there is no need for a cabinet," Mr Netanyahu told ministers on Sunday, according to the Jerusalem Post.

A spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that, as far as this decision is concerned, it will not affect the chain of command.

Gantz and Eisenkot resigned over the prime minister's leadership, including the lack of a plan for Gaza. 

The Israeli military launched a campaign in Gaza to destroy Hamas in response to an unprecedented attack in southern Israel on October 7, during which around 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage.

More than 37,330 people have been killed in Gaza since then, according to Hamas' health ministry./ CNA
