Russian security forces have killed the kidnappers of several hostages at a detention center in southern Russia, Russian state media reported on June 16.

Hostages at the detention center in Rostov-on-Don were not injured, RIA Novosti said, citing the Russian federal prison service.

Novosti reported that the kidnappers had been "liquidated", while local media reported that some of the prisoners had been killed.

It was reported that six prisoners took hostage two staff members of the detention center in the Rostov region, demanding a car and an open road to escape.

The six hijackers were accused of terrorist activities, while some of them were reported to have ties to the Islamic State (IS).

IS has carried out a number of attacks on Russian soil in recent years, including an attack in March when gunmen opened fire on people at a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow, killing 145 people./ REL
