France, Germany and Great Britain condemned Iran on Saturday for taking steps to further expand its nuclear program.

The three allies said Iran was violating the landmark 2015 deal on its nuclear program after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Thursday that Iran was ramping up uranium enrichment facilities at two sites.

"These measures will again increase Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium, the level of which has already exceeded the limits set by the 2015 agreement," France, Germany and Britain said in a joint statement.

A week ago, these countries tabled a resolution at a meeting of the IAEA's board of governors, criticizing Tehran for a lack of cooperation with the agency overseeing its nuclear program.

Iran called the resolution "hasty and reckless". Iran denies it intends to develop nuclear weapons, saying its nuclear program is for peaceful and civilian purposes.

Germany, France and Britain said it was unacceptable for Iran to take such steps in response to the resolution.

According to the IAEA, Iran is the only state that does not possess nuclear weapons but has enriched uranium to a high level of 50 percent and continues to accumulate large uranium reserves.

The IAEA has said that Tehran has accelerated its nuclear program and now has enough material to build several atomic bombs.

The 2015 nuclear deal lifted US sanctions on Iran, but in 2018 then-US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal and Washington has since reimposed sanctions on Iran that have crippled the Islamic Republic's economy.

Efforts to revive the agreement have failed and Tehran has violated the terms of the agreement by producing highly enriched uranium.

In March, Bloomberg News quoted a senior US Defense Department official as saying that Iran is less than 12 days away from possessing the materials needed to produce a nuclear bomb.
