Italy arrested a suspect on Friday accused of helping the son of a Russian governor flee his country while facing extradition to the United States on suspicion of illegally exporting military technology, authorities said.

The arrested person allegedly arranged for Artyom Uss to leave Italy in March 2023, the day after an Italian court approved his extradition to the United States.

Uss was one of five Russians arrested at Washington's request for "illegal schemes to export powerful military technology" to Russia. Uss disappeared from his residence and a few days later announced that he had returned to Russia.

The suspect arrested on Friday, also Russian, is believed to have followed Milan court rulings that ordered the extradition of Uss and the preparation of a plan for his escape.

The suspect, a Swiss resident, is also accused of "contacting members of the gang who then escaped," a statement from Milan's public prosecutor's office said. The prosecution said that the 54-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was in constant contact with Uss's family.

Italian media identified the suspect as entrepreneur Dmitry Chirakadze, co-founder of the Pravo.ru group, which provides assistance to Russian court websites.
