Police officers from across Europe have flown to Germany to help safeguard against potential threats at the Euro 2024 European football championship.

The Minister of the Interior of France, Nancy Faeser, promised increased security measures on the eve of the championship. "Our main focus is the threat from Islamic terrorism, hooligans and their actions, ordinary and violent crimes, but this time also the risk of cyber attacks," Ms Faeser told a meeting with about 350 foreign officers sent to Germany to European Cup.

Groups such as Islamic State have already called for attacks during the month-long championship, which opens on Friday with Germany v Scotland.

"That's why our security authorities are going after the Islamic scene with priority," Ms Faeser said. She added that the authorities are not aware of any concrete plot.

Germany expects 2.7 million people to watch the championship in stadiums around the country and around 12 million in other venues outside the stadiums, including a large screened area in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.

Around 22,000 police officers will be on round-the-clock duty to protect security. German authorities are also working with international partners to identify potential threats and the country has increased border controls./ VOA
