A Russian warplane briefly violated Sweden's airspace east of the Baltic island of Gotland on Friday and was confronted by Swedish warplanes, the Swedish military said on Saturday.

She emphasized in a statement that the Russian SU-24 fighter jet had not responded to the warnings and as a result, two Swedish fighter jets were sent after it.

The Swedish military said the airstrike was brief.

"Russia's actions are not acceptable and show a lack of respect for our territorial integrity," said the head of the Swedish Armed Forces, Jonas Wikman.

"We followed all the procedures and were ready to intervene", he added.

Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Sweden has provided $4.1 billion in military aid to Kiev.

After the start of the war in Ukraine, Sweden, as well as Norway, abandoned their policy of military non-engagement by joining the Western military alliance NATO.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Finland's Border Guard said it suspected four Russian warplanes had violated the Nordic country's airspace on June 10.

"While the investigation is ongoing, it appears that, in addition to the previously reported Russian aircraft, there are also reasons to suspect that three other aircraft caused territorial violations," the border guard agency said in a statement on Friday.

In its communiqué, it is stated that the Russian planes consisted of two bombers and two fighter planes./ REL
