Pope Francis became the first pope to address a summit of the world's seven most industrialized nations (G7), warning world leaders that Artificial Intelligence must never be allowed to dominate humanity.

The Pope said Artificial Intelligence represents an "epochal transformation" for humanity, but stressed the need for close supervision of the ever-evolving technology to preserve human life and dignity.

"No machine should ever choose to take the life of a human being," he said before adding that humans should not let superpowered algorithms decide their fate.

"We would be condemning humanity to a hopeless future if we took away people's ability to make decisions about their lives, condemning them to depend on the choices of machines," he warned.

The G7 summit, which is being held in Italy, brings together the leaders of the United States, Germany, Britain, France, Italy, Canada and Japan.

Pope Francis acknowledged that Artificial Intelligence can expand access to knowledge worldwide.

"It is up to everyone to use (Artificial Intelligence) well, but the responsibility belongs to politics to create the conditions for such a good use to be possible and fruitful", he added.

In a draft of their concluding statement, G7 leaders said on Friday that they will draw up a plan to anticipate future skills and education needs to take advantage of the pending revolution in Artificial Intelligence./ Rel
