This weekend, in Switzerland, in an area on Lake Lucerne, the Peace Summit for Ukraine will take place.

More than 90 countries are participating in this important event, which aims to reach agreement on basic principles for ending the conflict in Ukraine, reports the BBC.

The Swiss hope the Ukraine summit could produce the first "blueprints" for a peace process, some 28 months after Russia invaded its neighbor.

But with major players like China staying away and Russian President Vladimir Putin issuing a new ultimatum — demanding Ukraine's capitulation and calling it a peace proposal — expectations for significant progress are low.

But, for Ukraine, only the fact that this meeting is taking place is positive. Politicians in Kiev have hailed each confirmed participant as a gesture of support. For them, the giant summit should show Moscow that the world is on the side of Ukraine - and of international law.

Ukraine now wants to rally as many countries as possible behind its formula, exerting "psychological pressure" on Russia.

Joe Biden will not be in person, a decision that upset Zelensky. Countries such as India, Brazil and China may send low-level representatives.

Russian officials have lined up to dismiss the incident as trivial. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, it is "invalid" and "a dead end". On the other hand, Moscow has pushed its allies to boycott the summit./CNA
