Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) most industrialized countries did not discuss Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for peace in Ukraine at all because they all knew the proposal was not serious, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

Speaking in Italy shortly before leaving for Switzerland, where the summit on Ukraine will start on Saturday, Scholz said that Putin made this proposal only to distract attention from the summit in Switzerland.

Putin vowed on Friday to "immediately" order a ceasefire in Ukraine and the start of talks if Kiev begins withdrawing troops from four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claims belongs to it, and if it drops its demand to joined NATO.

"We all know that this proposal was not seriously thought through, but it had something to do with the peace conference in Switzerland," Scholz told ZDF television.

The terms put forward by Putin, which have been presented by Russian officials several times in the past, were once again rejected by Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that the Russian president's ceasefire offer cannot be trusted.

Dozens of world leaders gathered in Switzerland on Saturday to try to find a way to end the more than two-year war in Ukraine.

More than 90 countries and international organizations are taking part in the summit meetings, which will be held in a mountain resort in the town of Burgenstok.

US Vice President Kamala Harris and the leaders of France, Germany, Canada, Italy, Great Britain and Japan are among those expected to attend.

However, Moscow was not invited at all to this summit, which Ukrainian officials have described as a "summit for peace". Even before Putin's statements on June 14, Russian officials dismissed the summit as "worthless".

This has prompted China, which is Moscow's major trading partner and supports most of Moscow's positions in the international arena, to decide not to participate./REL
