Increasingly, people are avoiding the news, considering it depressing and boring, a global survey conducted by the Reuters Institute of the University of Oxford has revealed.

Almost four in 10 people - 39 percent - worldwide said they often or sometimes avoid the news, up from 29 percent in 2017, according to the research.

The war in Ukraine and the Middle East may have contributed to people's desire to stay away from the news, the report's authors said.

According to them, ignoring the news is now at record levels.

A total of 94,943 young people in 47 countries around the world were surveyed by YouGov in January and February for the purpose of this year's news report.

These findings came as billions of people around the world voted or will vote in 2024 for national and regional elections.

The report found that the election has increased interest in the news in several countries, including the United States.

However, the trend is generally negative, according to the study.

Worldwide, 46 percent of people said they are extremely interested in news – up from 63 percent in 2017.

The results showed that the audience of television and printed newspapers has declined significantly in the last decade, as young people prefer to see their news online or on social networks.

The most important platform for news is still Facebook, although it is declining year after year.

YouTube and WhatsApp are very important platforms for news for a part of the audience, while TikTok is on the rise and has surpassed platform X - formerly known as Twitter - for the first time.

According to the findings, 13 percent of people use TikTok for news, compared to 10 percent who reported using X.

The figure is higher for TikTok in the 18-24 age group – 23 percent./ REL
