Stoltenberg: NATO is considering putting nuclear weapons on standby
Jens Stoltenberg

The Secretary General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, stated that there have been consultations among the members of the alliance regarding the removal of nuclear weapons from their storage, deployment and readiness, stating that transparency in this case is an obstacle.

"NATO is discussing the deployment of more nuclear weapons in the face of the growing threat from Russia and China," Stoltenberg told the British Telegraph.

According to him, the alliance should show its nuclear arsenal to send a direct message to its opponents.

"I will not go into the operational details but we have to consult on these issues. That is exactly what we are doing," Stoltenberg said.

He pointed out that transparency about nuclear weapons should be one of the foundations of NATO's nuclear strategy in preparing the alliance.

"Transparency helps to convey a direct message that we are, of course, a nuclear alliance. NATO's goal is, of course, a world without nuclear weapons, but as long as there are nuclear weapons, we will remain an alliance nuclear, because a world in which Russia, China and North Korea have nuclear weapons and not having NATO is a more dangerous world," said Stoltenberg.

According to him, China in particular is investing in modern weapons, including its nuclear arsenal.

"And this means that in the not-so-distant future, NATO may face something it has never faced before, namely two potential adversaries with nuclear weapons - China and Russia," Stoltenberg said./ CNA
