A new CS Mott Children's Hospital National Survey in the US has reported that 1 in 4 parents said their child has trouble sleeping because they are restless.

Over a third of parents reported that their child does not stay asleep through the night and often or occasionally wakes up upset or crying.

"Between the ages of 1 and 6, children change a lot. The different stages they go through are often quite predictable: They're afraid of the dark, or as children develop and their imaginations develop and now they're afraid of monsters," said Sarah Clark, co-director of the survey.

The Mott survey was conducted in February with 781 parents who have at least one child between the ages of 1 and 6.

Almost half of the parents reported that their child had left the bed and moved into the parent's bed some or most nights. While 1 in 3 parents said that their child often or occasionally insists that they stay in the room until the child sleeps.

But some of these habits can cause more problems than the temporary relief they provide, Clark said.

The survey also found that 1 in 5 parents often or sometimes give their child melatonin at bedtime, which came as a surprise given the youngest age of 1 to 6./ CNA
