On January 6, 2021, the United States Capitol building was attacked by supporters of former President Donald Trump protesting his loss in the 2020 election. VOA Correspondent Dora McCourt reports that in their rematch this year , former President Trump and President Joe Biden are campaigning on the lessons learned from the January 6 violence.

The violence of January 6, 2021 is central to former President Donald Trump's re-election bid.

He launched an electoral activity with a song by the convicts of that day.

“You heard the hostages singing. They were hostages. I call them the January 6 hostages," Mr. Trump said.

The crowd cheered when former President Trump referred to the Jan. 6 attendees as patriots and hostages rather than convicted felons.

"Under Joe Biden's leadership, American patriots are being arrested and held captive like animals," he said.

"They were rebels, not patriots. They did not come out to defend the Constitution; came out to destroy the Constitution... If re-elected, he will pardon every single one of them... Trump's attack on democracy is not just a thing of the past. It's what he's promising for the future," said President Biden.

How the violence of 2021 will affect this year's election depends on one's perception, says American University political scientist Chris Edelson.

"Some people get energy from January 6. Some others are terrified," he says.

Both former President Trump and President Biden are using January 6 as a warning of what can happen if the wrong person wins the election./ Voa
