About 1,500 media professionals from more than 100 countries have registered to attend the DW Global Media Forum on June 17 and 18 in Bonn, Germany. This year's motto is "Sharing solutions", to share the best solutions with each other. It is about solutions for important issues that concern journalism and media around the world.

Benjamin Pargan, who heads the relevant department at DW, lists the main topics: security of media professionals, physical, psychological, legal or economic security. Since 2024 is an election year in, for example, India, the EU or the US, election coverage will also be in focus. In addition, how to deal with disinformation campaigns, the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its impact on the daily work of journalists.

Pressure from many sides

Free and balanced media today are under various pressures, explains Pargan: "There are state actors who deliberately want to undermine trust in media and journalists. Populist and extremist parties also see quality media as enemies and are working to destroy this faith".

In addition, according to Pargani, there is technical development, economic pressure and ultimately constant danger for media professionals in war zones. "All of this will play a role in our discussions."

Even Germany is not immune to some of these problems, says Hendrik Wüst (CDU), the prime minister of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, in a speech. "Here too, radical forces are fighting against the freedom and independence of the media. The opponents of our democracy deny the facts. They rely on fake news and propaganda, on hatred and agitation." The GMF offers a perfect platform for exchange, says politician Hendrik Wust.

Many positive examples

Journalists also complain that the flood of media offers in users' works causes information fatigue, especially with negative news. This topic will also be discussed at the GMF. Some members of the media feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of cases.

But there are many positive examples that people from all over the world want to present at GMF. Such as Maria Ressa from the Philippines. With her online news organization Rappler, she fights disinformation and won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

Or Moki Makura journalist and publicist from Nigeria. With her organization Africa No Filter, she seeks to challenge harmful stories and clichés about Africa and highlight the continent's achievements and opportunities. Or Nada Bashir, the CNN reporter who made a name for herself reporting on the war in the Gaza Strip and the war in Ukraine.

Lectures and discussions are different
