A cargo ship sank in the Red Sea after an attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels is believed to have killed a sailor on board, authorities said on June 19.

This is the second ship to be sunk since the rebels launched their campaign of attacks late last year.

The sinking of the Tutor in the Red Sea marks what appears to be a new escalation by the Iran-backed rebels in their campaign to target ships passing through the important maritime corridor.

The Houthi rebels launched their attacks in November last year because of the war between Israel and Hamas - the Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - in the Gaza Strip.

The attack on the ship comes despite a US-led campaign in the region that has seen the most intense naval fighting since World War II, as rebels launch near-daily attacks on commercial ships and warships.

The Tutor ship, registered in Liberia but owned by Greece, sank in the Red Sea, the UK Navy said, as it issued a warning to sailors in the region.

"Military authorities report that fragments of the ship have been seen in the place where it was last reported to be found. The ship is believed to have sunk," the United Kingdom said.

The Huthi rebels have not yet confirmed the sinking of the ship, while the US military has also not commented on the case.

The Tutor ship was attacked about a week ago by Houthi rebel drones. On Monday, White House national security adviser John Kibry said that "a crew member from the Philippines" was killed in the attack.

Houthi rebels have carried out more than 50 attacks on ships, killing four sailors. They have captured one ship and since November have sunk two more. Meanwhile, the air campaign led by the US against the Yemeni rebels started in January of this year./ Rel
