More than 880 people have crossed the English Channel in a single day. British Prime Minister Sunak wanted to stop illegal immigration. But two weeks before the parliamentary elections, the pressure on him has increased.

Crossing the English Channel to the United Kingdom by boat endangers the lives of migrants: on Tuesday more than 880 people were registered who had taken this route. This is the highest number recorded in a single day this year.

Since the start of the year, a total of 12,313 people have arrived in the UK via the English Channel, which is 18% more than the same time last year. At that time there were 10,472 people.

The fact that so many people are re-arriving in the UK via this route is not good news for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The president has made the issue of immigration one of the main issues of his electoral campaign for the July 4 parliamentary elections and has promised to come by boat. Controversial deal with Rwanda

To achieve this, the head of the conservative government wants people who entered the country irregularly to be deported to Rwanda in the future, without their asylum claim being examined and regardless of their origin. This plan should have been implemented a long time ago. The United Kingdom has already transferred an amount equal to about 284 million euros to the East African country. However, apart from a voluntary departure, no immigrant has been deported so far.

According to Sunak, this agreement should have a preventive effect. At the moment there is no evidence for this. Experts suspect this will deter migrants from attempting to take dangerous boats across the English Channel to the UK.

If Sunaku suffers defeat in the British general election in two weeks' time, the evictions are unlikely to happen. The opposition Labor Party is far ahead of Sunak's conservatives in the polls and wants to cancel the asylum pact with Rwanda./ DW
