The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, is expected to announce on June 20 that he will give up the race to become the next head of NATO.

He is the only obstacle in the way of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, to take the post of Secretary General of the military alliance.

Speaking in Bucharest on June 19, after a meeting with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Iohannis said he would first discuss his decision with Romania's Supreme Council of National Defense and then make it public.

Earlier in the day, Hungary and Slovakia said they would support Rutten, leaving Romania the only country among the 32 NATO member states that has not supported the 57-year-old Dutch leader./ REL
