Macron asks schools to address the issue of anti-Semitism
The President of France, Emmanuel Macron.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday asked schools to hold "an hour of discussion" on racism and anti-Semitism this week, following the rape of a Jewish girl in Paris.

Three teenagers were arrested this week after n

a complaint by a 12-year-old girl from Courbevoie, west of Paris, who told police officials she had been gang-raped and insulted with anti-Semitic slurs, the Nanterre prosecutor's office said.

The investigation is centered around allegations of rape, death threats and assault.

Anti-Semitic incidents in France have increased since Hamas - the group designated as a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union - carried out an attack in southern Israel on October 7, which triggered Israel's war in Gaza as a result.

Macron reacted quickly, at a time when France finds itself in a three-week election campaign after he called early parliamentary elections.

The president asked Education Minister Nicole Belloubet "to organize a discussion in all schools about the fight against anti-Semitism and racism, to prevent hate speech," Macron's office said.

Opponents have accused the National Movement and the far-left party Unyielding France, part of the Popular Front, of tolerating anti-Semitic attitudes in their ranks.

These allegations are denied by both parties.

The leader of the National Movement, Jordan Bardella, said on Wednesday that France must definitely fight the "anti-Semitic atmosphere", which has been present in the country since the war in Gaza began./REL
