Iran has condemned Canada's decision to list the Revolutionary Guards of the Islamic Republic as a terrorist organization.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, is quoted as saying that such a decision is "reckless and an unconventional politically motivated step."

"Canada's action will have no effect on the legitimacy and deterrent power of the Revolutionary Guards," Kanaani said, according to Fars news agency, adding that Tehran reserves the right to respond to the decision.

On June 19, Ottawa listed the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, a step that could lead to the investigation of former senior Iranian officials now living in Canada.

In 2019, the United States took similar action against the Revolutionary Guard, which Western countries accuse of waging a campaign of global terrorism.

Tehran rejects such an accusation, arguing that the Guard is an elite force and a sovereign institution that is responsible for maintaining Iran's national security.
