Romania sends anti-aircraft "Patriot" to Ukraine

NATO member Romania announced Thursday that it will send a Patriot anti-aircraft missile to Ukraine, following Kiev's request for help in its fight against Russian occupation forces.

"Taking into account the deterioration of the security situation in Ukraine... council members decided to donate a Patriot system to Ukraine, in close cooperation with allies," said Romania's Supreme National Defense Council.

The donation was made "on the condition that our country continues talks with allies, in particular with the USA, for the acceptance of a similar or equivalent system" to protect our airspace, the announcement states.

While Kiev is calling for more Patriot anti-aircraft missiles, NATO countries have been reluctant to provide them, as they want to protect their own airspace.

Recently, Germany announced that it will send a third Patriot anti-aircraft missile to Ukraine, while the United States is expected to donate a second battery to Kiev, according to US media.

Romania signed a $4 billion deal for seven Patriot batteries with the US in 2017, the largest defense deal in its history.

Two of the four anti-aircraft guns he has received so far are fully operational.

Romania has provided military aid to Ukraine in its war against Russia, but has refused to reveal the extent of the support, for security reasons.

It has also pledged to train Ukrainian pilots in the use of F-16 fighter jets at a regional center inaugurated in November 2023./REL
