Kiev: Russian "massive" attack on state energy infrastructure

Ukraine's Energy Ministry and national grid operator Ukrenerho have said state energy infrastructure was targeted again with Russian missiles and drones in the early hours of June 22.

As a result of the attacks, the energy systems in the Lviv and Zaporizhia regions were damaged, Ukrenerho said through a statement on Telegram, and that two workers were hospitalized after the attacks in the Zaporizhia region.

The Ministry of Energy has said that, due to the attack, the power lines in the east of Ukraine have been disconnected, which has affected weaker energy supplies in the region.

Ukrenerho has said that this is the eighth large-scale attack that has targeted the energy system in the last three months.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's military said its air defense systems shot down 12 of 16 missiles and all 13 drones launched by Russia overnight.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not commented on the attack.

In another attack, on June 21, it was reported that five people were killed in the Donetsk region.

In recent months, Russia has systematically targeted critical energy infrastructure in Ukraine, causing extensive damage and leaving thousands without access to electricity.

According to some estimates, about half of the power generation capacity in Ukraine has been destroyed as a result of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on June 20 that he hopes to develop renewable energy infrastructure to overcome the energy crisis caused by Russian attacks.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022. Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.
