The Supreme Court overturns the death sentence for the Iranian rapper
Toomaj Salehi

The Supreme Court in Iran has overturned the death sentence against rapper Toomaj Salehi, his lawyer announced on Saturday.

In April, Salehi was sentenced to death by a court in Isfahan on charges of "corruption on Earth" while serving another prison sentence for participating in the 2022 protests that rocked Iran for several months.

"As expected, the Supreme Court has avoided an irreparable miscarriage of justice," said Saleh's lawyer, Amir Raisian, in a post on X - the platform formerly known as Twitter.

"The death sentence has been overturned and based on the decision of the Supreme Court, the case will be referred to a parallel branch for reconsideration."

Salehi, 33, was arrested for the first time in October 2022, after publicly declaring his support for the protests that erupted in September of that year, following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amin, who died was in police custody, on the grounds that he did not put the cover on his head properly.

He has been released and re-arrested several times since then, due to various decisions made by the courts.

Salehi has gained attention for the lyrics of his songs, with themes against corruption, poverty, executions and the killing of protesters in Iran.

He also spoke about the growing differences between Iranian residents and the country's leadership, accusing the authorities of "suffocating" people, without considering their well-being./ Rel
