Russia has launched three missiles towards the Kiev region in the early hours of June 23, as the number of victims increases from Russian bomb attacks in the city of Kharkiv, the day before.

Ukraine's air force has said it shot down two of three missiles launched in the Kiev region. It is unclear whether the third missile caused any damage.

The attack was reported shortly after Russia launched large-scale missile and drone attacks to target Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

The attacks have damaged power distribution systems in the Zaporizhia and Lviv regions. Ukrenerho said the attack was the eighth large-scale attack targeting the power grid in the past three months.

The bombings in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, have been described as separate attacks. Three people were killed in Kharkiv, while at least 56 were injured, according to Ukrainian authorities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has recently called for measures to protect Ukraine's energy system, said on June 22 that Russia had dropped more than 2,400 bombs in Ukraine this month, 700 in Kharkiv alone.

Zelensky has repeated his plea to the West for additional air defense and for Ukraine to be able to destroy Russian warplanes "wherever they are".

On June 23, Russian officials announced that Ukraine had launched dozens of drones into Russian territory.

The drones are believed to have reached the Bryansk and Smolensk regions, but no casualties have been reported./ Rel
