Hurricane Milton threatens to become a catastrophic category five storm for Florida, thus threatening this US state, which has faced another deadly hurricane just a few weeks ago.

Milton, which is expected to extend to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, has intensified rapidly, prompting the evacuation of residents.

Authorities have issued warnings that residents' lives may be at risk on Florida's west coast.

Communities in that area have been dealing with Hurricane Helene late last month.

"Last time people's cars were covered by water on the road, but this time the wind will be more dangerous", said David Levitsky, a pensioner on Trezhre Island.

In the latest announcement from the authorities, it has been said that Hurricane Milton can carry winds of up to 280 kilometers per hour.

Local authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders for several coastal areas, including Tampa, an area of ??more than three million residents.

"If the storm continues at this rate, it will be the worst to hit Tampa in 100 years," the National Weather Service said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Scientists believe that climate change is playing a role in the intensification of hurricanes.

US President Joe Biden has been notified of Hurricane Milton, and has said through a statement that his administration is preparing for "life-saving resources".

Hurricane Helene hit the coast of Florida in late September as a Category 4 storm, and has been described as the worst natural disaster on US soil since Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

So far, more than 250 people are reported to have died as a result of the storm, and the number is expected to rise./REL
