Peru, archaeologists discover 600-year-old site where children are thought to

In an area near the city of Trujillo in northern Peru, archaeologists have discovered the remains of several dozen children, believed to have been sacrificed more than 600 years ago.

"Many of the skeletons have cuts in the chest and some in the ribs," said archaeologist Julio Asencio from the excavation site.

Each child was buried separately, the scientist said. Also found near the dig site were the remains of two adults and the bones of nine llamas, thought to be an offering representing their source of food, clothing and transportation.

Archaeologist Julio Asencio said it is likely that the finds belong to the local "Chimu" group that dominated northern Peru from the 700s to the late 1400s.

Historians believe the group may have sacrificed the children as an attempt to appease the gods they believed in after heavy rains and floods in the area. A decade later they were conquered by the Inca population.

In the past, scientists discovered another area where mass sacrifices of 140 children from the Chimu group are believed to have taken place. According to scientists, the skeletons found had cuts in the chest and ribs and it is believed that their hearts were then removed. The bones of several hundred llamas were also found there.

Archaeologists have discovered in Peru several hundred ruins of various pre-Hispanic cultures up to the Inca empire, which 500 years ago stretched from present-day southern Ecuador to the central part of Chile./ VOA
