North Korea threatens nuclear weapons if attacked

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country would use nuclear weapons "without hesitation" if attacked by South Korea and its ally Washington, North Korean state media reported on October 4.

Relations between the two Koreas are at their lowest point in decades and Seoul this week held a military parade displaying a powerful missile it said could hit the North's underground bunkers. During the parade, South Korean President Yook Sun Yeol warned Kim that the use of nuclear weapons would mean the end of his regime.

If enemy forces "violated the sovereignty" of the North, Pyongyang "would unhesitatingly use all offensive forces at its disposal, including nuclear weapons," Kim said, according to state news agency KCNA.

According to photos released by KCNA, Kim made these statements during a special operations forces training.

He criticized Yoon for commenting on the "end of the regime" and South Korea's alliance with the United States.

Seoul, which does not have nuclear weapons, is allied with Washington, which has stationed tens of thousands of troops in the country since the Korean War ended in 1953 without a peace treaty.

Kim said that Seoul and Washington are "destroying regional security and peace."

On Tuesday, fighter jets flew over the skies of South Korea and South Korean weapons appeared on the road. This country for the first time displayed the largest ballistic missile it has, the Hyunmoo-5, which is capable of destroying underground bunkers.

During the parade, American B-1B bombers and F-15K fighter jets were also seen in the sky of South Korea.

Washington periodically deploys nuclear assets on the Korean Peninsula, saying it does so to protect Seoul from growing threats from Pyongyang.
