US military strikes Houthi targets in Yemen

The US military said it carried out 15 airstrikes on Friday against targets linked to fighters from the Iran-backed Houthi group in Yemen.

Local residents said explosions were heard at military checkpoints and even at an airport.

Central Command, which leads US forces in the Middle East, said the targets struck were Houthi offensive military weapons, but did not say whether they included missiles, drones or radars.

Houthi rebels have carried out nearly 100 attacks on ships passing through the Kua Sea since November. They say they are doing so in support of the Palestinians in Israel's now year-long war in the Gaza Strip.

They have sunk two ships, captured another and killed at least four sailors.

Al Masirah television, the main news channel run by the Houthi movement, and residents said airstrikes were carried out in several parts of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa and Hodeidah airport.

President Joe Biden's administration has largely acted in self-defense against Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, usually by shooting down drones and missiles launched against cargo ships and US warships./ REL
