Massive explosions in Beirut after Israeli airstrikes resume

Israeli bombardment caused huge explosions outside Beirut's international airport during a further night of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah in the city.

The target was unclear, but the airport borders Dahieh, Hezbollah's stronghold in the capital. Plumes of smoke could be seen over the city as the explosion occurred on Friday.

Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health said 37 people had been killed in Israeli ground and air strikes in the past 24 hours, while 151 others had been wounded.

Elsewhere, the Lebanese army said two of its soldiers had been killed in the country's south as Israeli forces continued their offensive against Hezbollah and ordered the evacuation of 20 other towns and villages.

Unlike the communities that were ordered to evacuate on Tuesday, they are all located north of the Litani River, which lies about 30 km (18 miles) from the border.

Before the invasion, Israel had demanded that Hezbollah withdraw at Litani, in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution that ended their last war in 2006./ CNA
