USA, the debate between the candidates for the post of vice president

Bipartisan candidates for the post of vice president of the United States, Democrat Tim Walz and Republican JD Vance held the first and only vice presidential debate. As Voice of America correspondent Tina Trinh reports from New York, the candidates talked about the American economy, Iran's attacks on Israel, arms control and other topics.

Republican candidate JD Vance and Democratic challenger Tim Walz held their first and only vice presidential debate Tuesday night.

During the 90-minute debate, hosted by CBS News, the candidates discussed the US economy, Iran's attacks on Israel, arms control and other topics.

Mr. Vance is running alongside former President Donald Trump, whom Mr. Walz accuses of subverting world diplomacy.

"We had a coalition of countries that had blocked the progress of the Iranian nuclear program. Donald Trump withdrew from the program and did not replace it with anything. "Iran is now closer to producing a nuclear weapon than it was before because of the unstable leadership of Donald Trump," said Tim Walz, Democratic vice presidential candidate.

Mr. Walz is running alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, whom Mr. Vance blamed for problems in Springfield, Ohio, where he and Mr. Trump have made claims, without providing evidence, that Haitian immigrants feed on local residents' pets.

“Housing has become completely unaffordable, due to the millions of illegal immigrants who are competing with Americans for the few homes on the market. "The people I feel most concerned about are the American citizens whose lives have been destroyed by the open border from Kamala," said Republican Vance.

Regarding the debated issue of abortion rights, Mr. Vance said that is up to the states to decide.

"The proper way to handle this, given the space that democracy creates, is to leave it up to the voters and individual states to make these decisions and craft their own abortion policies," Mr. Vance said. .

Walz, a Democrat, said the decision is up to women and their doctors.

"How can we as a country say that your life and your rights, the basic right to make decisions about your body, are defined on a geographic basis," said Democrat Walz.

Supporters of the candidates offered their comments after the debate.

"It was a debate dominated by JD Vance. I think he spoke directly to the American people about important issues like the illegal immigration crisis caused by Kamala Harris," said Republican lawmaker Elise Stefanik, who represents New York in the House of Representatives.

“Tim Walz is who he is. I have known him for more than a decade. I served with him for 10 years in Congress. He is authentic, isn't he? "He's got no polish and he's opened his heart to the American people about issues that matter to him," said Democrat Jared Polis, Colorado's governor.

Early voting has already begun in 23 states. While there is a little more than a month left from election day, polls show that the presidential race continues to be close./ VOA
