Zelensky visits Ukrainian troops on the border with the Russian region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Ukrainian troops in the country's northeastern Sumy region on Friday, where he spoke with commanders and soldiers who are fighting along Ukraine's border with Russia and in Russia's Kursk region.

Ukraine launched the surprise incursion into Kursk precisely from Sumy, almost two months ago.

Zelensky emphasized that the operation is "strategic" to motivate Kiev's partners to be "more decisive and to put pressure on Russia".

Ukrainian forces are said to have occupied about 1,300 square kilometers of Russian land in the Kursk region. Although the pace of the incursion has slowed, Zelensky said it has "helped a lot" Kiev to secure the latest package of military aid from the West.

"We need to motivate the whole world and convince them that Ukrainians can be more powerful than the enemy," Zelensky told Ukrainian soldiers.

He emphasized the importance of protecting Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Meanwhile, military and regional officials reported earlier Friday that the Russian military killed at least three civilians during attacks in four Ukrainian regions.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia attacked Ukraine with 19 drones, nine of which were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses over four regions, Kiev, Cherkasy, Kirovohrad and Kherson.

Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike set fire to an oil depot in Russia's southwestern Voronezh region on Friday morning, regional governor Aleksandr Gusev said on Telegram.

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
