A Hamas commander is killed during an Israeli attack in Lebanon

An Israeli attack on a refugee camp in northern Lebanon has killed a commander of Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - the group announced on October 5.

This is the first time that Israel has attacked in this area since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023.

Saeed Attallah Ali, his wife and their two daughters were killed "by Zionist [Israeli] bombings at their home in Camp Bedavi," near the city of Tripoli, the statement said.

Israel has repeatedly targeted Hamas members in Lebanon since the war in Gaza began almost a year ago.

Since then, Hamas has said at least 18 of its members have been killed in Lebanon.

Hamas said Monday's airstrikes killed its leader in Lebanon, Fatah Sharif Abu al-Amine, at his home in southern Lebanon's al-Bas camp.

In August, during an Israeli airstrike in Sidon, southern Lebanon, Hamas commander Samer al-Hajj was killed. Meanwhile, an attack in January that US defense officials said was carried out by Israel killed Hamas deputy chief Saleh al-Aruri and six other Palestinian radicals south of Beirut.

There are dozens of Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon that were created to house Palestinians who fled during the 1948 war, around the time Israel was created./ VOA
