The race Harris - Trump, the last month of the campaign for the White House

There is only one month left until the November 5 presidential election in the United States, and Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump continue their intense campaigning. VOA correspondent Scott Stearns takes a look at the race for the White House as it enters its final stages.

Rivals Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are trying in the final month of their campaigns to gain ground in communities where they may have less support.

Polls show that Vice President Harris enjoys greater support among women voters. During a rally in North Carolina, Mr. Trump vowed to protect women, who he said are poorer, with more health problems and less safe than when he was president.

"They are spending more money on food and everything else than they did four years ago. They are more stressed, more depressed and unhappy than they were four years ago. I'm going to fix all these problems," Mr. Trump promised American women.

Access to abortion is one of the reasons why Mr. Trump ranks behind Democrat Harris among women voters. He appointed to the Supreme Court members who helped end a more than 50-year-old federal law protecting abortion.

More than twenty states have imposed abortion restrictions since the Supreme Court's 2022 decision, including Georgia. Ms Harris told the rally that these votes are about women's freedoms.

"One does not have to abandon one's religious faith or beliefs to agree that the state should not tell women what to do. Women can choose for themselves if they want to talk to the priest, rabbi or hoxha. So it's not up to the government or Donald Trump to tell women what to do with their bodies," Ms. Harris said.

But on the other hand, Republican Trump leads among male voters.

Efforts to drum up support for Ms. Harris among men also include an ad from the Lincoln Project that is against Mr. Trump. The ad says Harris is the best for the middle class and asks men to vote for her.

The economy continues to be the top issue for most voters. Mr. Trump says he will attract foreign investment and create more jobs.

"I will offer the world's biggest companies and businesses lower taxes, lower energy costs, regulatory relief and free access to the best and biggest market on the planet, but only if their product they are made here in America," said Mr. Trump.

Ms Harris is promising a $25,000 grant for new home buyers.

"I know it means everything to people who work tirelessly, save and have a dream that is about the dignity of their work and investing in their future, their family's future. An investment in their pride, which they rightfully deserve because of their hard work," said Ms Harris.

Early voting has already continued in 23 states. Voter Maxine Maxim supports Ms. Harris.

"We need a change. Congress and the White House must have sense. We want women's rights".

Voter Eugene Otteson supports Mr. Trump.

“I like someone who can run a business. He proved that he can lead the country. We still don't know what Kamala's attitudes are."

While most states are decided on who they will vote for, it is likely that the winner of the election will be determined by battleground states such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada./ VOA
