The EES entry-exit system in the Schengen area enters full operation today

Starting today, April 10, 2026, the European Entry/Exit System (EES) will enter full operation in the 29 countries of the Schengen area, replacing manual stamping of passports with electronic registration of the entries and exits of citizens from non-member countries of the European Union.

This system, which has been partially implemented since October 2025, will apply to all citizens traveling for short-term stays, up to 90 days within a 180-day period, in the Schengen area.

At the first entry after April 10, 2026, the following will be recorded at the border crossing:
passport data, facial photograph, and fingerprints.

Refusal to provide biometric data results in refusal of entry into the Schengen territory.

In the initial phase of implementation, there may be delays at airports, ports and land border crossings; therefore, citizens are advised to report early for travel.

The passport must be valid and in good physical condition.
No prior application for the EES is required; registration is carried out at the moment of border crossing.
The system does not change the existing rule of stay: maximum 90 days in any 180-day period. /CNA
