Statistics: 51% of Europeans are avoiding holidays in popular destinations

The modern European traveler seeks a meaningful connection with the destination, guided by sustainability and quality of experience, according to a new study by the European Travel Commission (ETC), in collaboration with MINDHAUS.

Specifically, 8 out of 10 Europeans are planning a trip within Europe and 4 out of 10 are anticipating a spend of more than 1,500 euros. These are travelers who choose alternative destinations, longer stays and more frequent trips outside peak hours.

Indicatively, 51% head to lesser-known destinations and 10% to more remote areas, while their trips are planned more carefully, with 50% choosing stays of more than seven nights and 67% traveling during the intermediate or low season, thus contributing to a better distribution of tourist flows.

This trend extends to different types of travel: 22% choose sun and sea holidays, while 15% choose city trips, cultural experiences and activities close to nature, and 10% wellness trips. At the same time, the main criteria for choosing a destination remain safety (45%), reliable weather conditions (35%), attractive offers (30%) and the hospitality of the locals (28%).

At the same time, the issue of overcrowding is highlighted, with 25% stating that they are concerned about the large number of visitors and 26% consciously preferring less crowded destinations. Interestingly, only 15% report being concerned about the personal environmental footprint of their travels. /CNA
