The silent cancer that affects a large number of us

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Europe, accounting for 7.4% of cancer deaths. In the initial stages, the disease does not cause symptoms, with the result that 80% of cases are already diagnosed in advanced stages.

Unfortunately, the incidence of pancreatic cancer is increasing at ~1% per year in recent years, while the mortality rate is 0.2%. But while the incidence of pancreatic cancer shows an increasing trend, survival is constantly improving with new therapeutic advances.

Specifically, while the five-year survival rate was below 5% in previous decades, it now stands at 12%. Of particular interest are all the new treatment options that have increased survival in this deadly disease.

Recently, a number of new targeted therapies have been added to our therapeutic arsenal and have significantly improved survival in pancreatic cancer. PARP inhibitors are new drugs that are now widely used in the treatment of ovarian, breast and prostate cancer.

Although the success rates of immunotherapy are high in some solid malignancies, in pancreatic cancer most immunotherapy studies have failed to improve survival. This is mainly due to the microenvironment of the tumor and its low infiltration by T cells of the immune system./ CNA
