The first successful complete eye transplant in a living person has been performed in New York, USA.

The intervention was performed by a surgical team at NYU Langone Health. The person who underwent the transplant was Aaron James.

The 46-year-old, a military veteran based in Arkansas, worked as a power line conductor and in June 2021 his face accidentally touched a live wire.

The 7,200-volt electric shock caused multiple injuries to Aaron's face: his left eye, his entire nose and lips, his left cheek area and chin, and his left arm.

Aaron was given a new window of hope after he was promised a transplant. The intervention was carried out at the end of May by a team of more than 140 surgeons and lasted about 21 hours.

The operation involved transplanting the entire left eye and parts of the face from a single donor.

According to the medical team, Aaron's eye is now showing "extraordinary" signs. Although he cannot see yet, he remains hopeful that sight may come in time.

There is hope that his first-of-its-kind procedure could help advance transplant medicine.

"That's really my biggest hope. If I can see, that's great. But if he's going down the other path in the medical field, then I'm all for it," Aaron said.

Aaron's story was reported only in the last day in the international media, creating optimism for similar cases./ CNA
