Organ donation and transplantation is a surgical process to replace a failing organ with a healthy one from someone else who does not need it. Organ donors are usually recently deceased people who either volunteered before their death to donate their organs afterwards, or when family members donate them.
Healthy people can choose to donate certain organs and tissues that they can spare while protecting their health status. For example, you can live with only one kidney and donate the other kidney. You can also donate part of your liver and your liver will grow to almost full size.
Organ transplantation is one of the great advances in modern medicine. It offers a second chance at life to people of all ages who have life-threatening illnesses or injuries to their vital organs. Other donated tissues, such as corneas, tendons and bones, can improve lives by helping to restore vision, movement and other physical functions. But the need for organ donations far exceeds the available supply. In the US, over 100,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant on any given day. But only about 40,000 transplants are done each year.
According to previous data, every day 20 people die while waiting for a transplant.
7 organs that are donated:
1- Heart: As the hardest working muscle in the body, the heart beats 60-80 times per minute and is responsible for pumping blood to every area. Conditions that make a heart transplant necessary are cardiomyopathy, heart failure, myocarditis and heart disease.
2- Kidneys: Kidneys are the most necessary and most frequently transplanted organ. The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste and excess water from the blood and balancing body fluids. Those on dialysis for high blood pressure, diabetes, or cystic kidney disease may be candidates for a kidney transplant.
3- Liver: The liver has more than 500 known functions in the human body, including the production of bile that aids in digestion, the breakdown of harmful substances in the blood, and the storage of vitamins, sugars, and fats. Because of its many functions, donating a liver can save people from chronic liver infections such as hepatitis or damage from drugs or alcohol. A donated liver can sometimes be shared between two recipients, meaning that one donor can save the lives of two people.
4- Lungs: The lungs have a very important function in the body: extracting oxygen and extracting carbon dioxide. Conditions that often require a lung transplant include cystic fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, emphysema, and pulmonary edema. Similar to the liver, a donor can save the lives of two people by donating their lungs.
5- Pancreas: People need their pancreas to help regulate insulin. The pancreas produces insulin, which is a hormone that helps the body use glucose (sugar) for energy, and enzymes that break down fat, protein, and carbohydrates during digestion. It is common for the pancreas to be transplanted with a kidney, because diabetes often affects both organs.
6- Guts: Your intestines are responsible for digesting food and absorbing nutrients back into the bloodstream. If you have a twisted or blocked intestine or short bowel syndrome, you may need an intestinal transplant.
7- Uterus - It is a recent type of transplant and was an important innovation in the medical field when it was first shown that it could be successful. A new uterus is placed in a woman that will allow her to become pregnant and have a child of her own. It is the only treatment available for uterine factor infertility./ Euronws Albania
