Some people end up doing some pretty weird things while under anesthesia, research has shown.

From sexual comments to doctors' kisses, sedative-hypnotic drugs can distort people's sense of reality.

Some wake up from the procedures believing they have been sexually assaulted, which is more often than not, untrue.

Doctors have long known about the unusual side effects of drugs.

In fact, a 1984 review found that 18 percent of people receiving anesthesia during dental or medical surgery had difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy during and immediately after administration.

Meanwhile, a 1980 study found that about 14 percent of patients report some dreams or sexual arousal during anesthesia.

According to pharmacology researchers Melody White and C Michael White from the University of Connecticut, USA, these drugs slow down the brain and often lead to sexual thoughts - but experts don't know why.

Some people act or touch themselves in a sexual way, which can be uncomfortable for the doctor, they explained.

The patient believes he has been sexually assaulted while sedated and is likely to experience the same vivid hallucinations of the event whether or not it actually happened.

Some medical professionals accused of actual or perceived sexual assault have been brought to court and had their licenses to practice revoked.

To try and understand why people are experiencing these dreams, scientists reviewed all published cases of sexual hallucinations in the medical literature.

Writing in The Conversation, they said they found a "striking match" between where the surgery or procedure took place and where the patient perceived inappropriate sexual contact.

They also recalled the findings of a 2009 study, which found that those most likely to experience sexual hallucinations received higher doses of anesthesia and were younger than 50 years old.

There have also been reports of people experiencing similar hallucinations while taking sleeping and anti-anxiety pills such as alprazolam and temazepam, which are also sedative-hypnotics./ CNA
