Territorial Reform/ Mazniku: Our goal is integration, not numbers

Arbjan Mazniku, co-chair of the majority for Administrative-Territorial Reform, invited to a show, stated that the number of municipalities should not be the goal for territorial reform, but that service provision is important.

According to Maznik, there are some small municipalities that are unable to do this.

"I believe that the number of municipalities should not be an end in itself, the ability to provide service is important. For you to go and receive a service in a certain municipality, that service must have a series of subsequent planning, which some small municipalities are unable to do," he said.

Mazniku underlined that the role of municipalities in the integration process is key as European policies directly affect the local level: from infrastructure and public services, to urban planning, environmental protection and economic development.

He added that strengthening local government is a necessary condition for advancing the country's European path.

According to Maznik, this phase of reform should aim at increasing services and improving local democracy, not numbers./ CNA
