statement

The Assembly of the Republic of Albania, in exercising its constitutional powers and fulfilling its role as representative of the will of the Albanian people, expresses its deep concern about the final request of the Special Prosecutor's Office of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague against the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi.

The Assembly of Albania, bearing in mind the historical truth of the liberation war of the Albanians of Kosovo, reiterates that the Kosovo Liberation Army was a legitimate liberation movement that fought for fundamental human rights, for freedom, dignity and self-determination of the people of Kosovo, in accordance with the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

The Assembly notes with concern that the Special Prosecution's request risks creating a dangerous distortion of history, equating a people's legitimate struggle for survival and freedom with the crimes of the Serbian regime of Miloševi?, which committed ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity against the people of Kosovo.

For this reason, the Assembly of the Republic of Albania declares:

1. Full and unconditional support for the leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, who were and remain representatives of the just aspirations of the people of Kosovo for freedom and self-determination. Their war was a just war, based on the universal principles of human rights.

2. The request addressed to the Specialist Chambers in The Hague, the international community and international justice institutions to declare the innocence of Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selim through a fair and impartial process, which respects and does not violate the dignity of the liberation war of the people of Kosovo, preventing the instruments of justice from being transformed into tools for rewriting history or equating the victim with the aggressor.

3. Reminding the international community that the KLA war took place under conditions when the Milosevic regime was committing ethnic cleansing, systematic crimes against humanity and genocidal acts against the civilian population of Kosovo, and that NATO's intervention in 1999 confirmed the legitimacy of that war and the criminal nature of the Milosevic regime.

4. High appreciation for international defense witnesses, such as Wesley Clark and James Rubin, who confirmed the right of the people of Kosovo and their leaders to freedom.

5. Full solidarity with the people of Kosovo and with the families of KLA leaders, reiterating that the Albanian nation stands united in defending the historical truth and dignity of the struggle for freedom.

6. Commitment to take every necessary diplomatic and political step in international forums to ensure that the historical truth about the Kosovo liberation war is not violated and that justice is fairly exercised.

The Assembly of the Republic of Albania calls on the institutions of the Albanian state, the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo and the Albanian diaspora to stand united in defending truth, dignity and justice for the people of Kosovo and for the leaders of their liberation war, Hashim Thaçi, Jakup Krasniqi, Kadri Veseli and Rexhep Selimi.

The Assembly of the Republic of Albania recommends to the governments of the Republic of Albania and the Republic of Kosovo to cooperate and coordinate on the international denunciation of Serbian crimes.

This declaration reflects the unanimous will of the Assembly of the Republic of Albania and is transmitted to the Specialized Chambers in The Hague, the UN Security Council, the European Parliament, the Parliamentary Assemblies of NATO, the OSCE and the Council of Europe, as well as to all friendly and partner governments.
