Zelensky: Russian ceasefire memorandum is an 'ultimatum'

Zelensky told reporters today that the Russian document outlining Moscow's demands to stop its invasion constituted an ultimatum.

His comments came after Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul exchanged terms to agree a ceasefire and said they were ready to organize another round of prisoner exchanges.

"That is, it is not a memorandum of understanding. At least a memorandum of understanding should be signed by two parties, not just one party that demands something. Therefore, it cannot be called a memorandum. Ultimately, it is an ultimatum from the Russian side to us," Zelensky said.

Zelensky said it made no sense to continue peace talks in Istanbul with the current level of Russian delegates as they are not high-ranking enough, calling instead for a meeting with Putin.

"We are ready for exchanges, but continuing diplomatic meetings in Istanbul at a level that does not resolve anything further, I think, is pointless," Zelensky said.

Instead, he said he was ready to hold a meeting with Putin and Trump, as American journalists report.

"We are ready for such a meeting any day," Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president said he was proposing a ceasefire be established before any such summit, which would also include Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The White House said Trump was open to meeting with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in Turkey after both sides failed on Monday to make progress toward an elusive ceasefire./CNA
