Dutch PM resigns after far-right leader quits coalition

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof has said he will resign on Tuesday, just hours after populist Geert Wilders removed his PVV party from the right-wing coalition.

These actions are expected to result in early elections being held.

Ministers from Wilders' PPV party will leave the cabinet, while other ministers will continue the work of the incumbent government.

New elections are not expected to be held before October, and the formation of a new government usually takes months in the Netherlands' divided political landscape.

These developments come as right-wing sentiments are strengthening in Europe, driven by anger over migration and the cost of living.

These topics have created divisions in Europe and this could be reflected in other topics, such as that of Russia, or in policies towards the administration of US President Donald Trump.

Wilders said earlier on Tuesday that his party would leave the coalition after the other three parties were unwilling to support his ideas on asylum and migration.

"No signatures for our asylum plans. PVV leaves the coalition," Wilders said in a post on X.

The other parties in the coalition will now have the opportunity to try to function as a minority government, although nothing of the sort is expected to happen.
