Dutch government collapses after clash over immigration policy

The ruling coalition in the Netherlands collapsed on Tuesday after Geert Wilders, the far-right leader and head of the Party for Freedom (PVV), decided to withdraw his party from the government due to deep disagreements over immigration policy.

Wilders, who emerged victorious in the November 2023 elections and leads the largest party in parliament, had warned in late May that he would cause the government to fall if his ten-point plan to restrict immigration was not implemented within a few weeks.

Wilders' plan included closing borders to asylum seekers, banning family reunification for recognized refugees, closing asylum centers, strengthening border controls, and deporting dual nationals who have been convicted of criminal offenses.

However, a number of political and legal experts described this plan as unworkable and illegal, while some assessed that Wilders had created the crisis himself with the aim of overthrowing the government and organizing new elections.

After brief and tense talks on Tuesday morning between the four coalition parties, Wilders stated that he had informed the prime minister that the PVV would withdraw from the government and that he could no longer bear responsibility for this cabinet.

He emphasized that he had entered the coalition to implement the toughest asylum policy and not to "destroy the Netherlands."

The PVV's withdrawal puts an end to a government that was fragile from the start and is expected to lead to early elections, plunging the country into a new period of political uncertainty.

Far-right forces are on the rise across Europe as the Netherlands prepares to host a key NATO summit.
