Conservative historian wins Polish presidential election

With all votes counted, right-wing historian Karol Nawrocki has been elected the new president of Poland.

PKW said Nawrocki won 50.9% of the vote - ahead of Warsaw's liberal mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, with 49.1%.

It is a sensational turnaround from the result of the first exit poll – published shortly after voting closed at 9:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. GMT) on Sunday – which showed Trzaskowski winning with 50.3% to Nawrocki's 49.7%.

Trzaskowski had declared victory after the first polls, while Nawrocki warned that the results were too close to predict.

"We won, although the expression 'razor's edge' will forever enter Polish language and politics," Trzaskowski told his supporters.

Nawrocki, after the result of the first exit poll, had said: "Let's not lose hope tonight. We will win overnight, the difference is minimal. I believe we will wake up tomorrow with President Karol Nawrocki."

As Poland's new president, Nawrocki is likely to continue to use his presidential veto power to block Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's pro-EU agenda.

The result is also likely to reinvigorate Nawrocki's supporters, the conservative national opposition Law and Justice (PiS), which lost power eighteen months ago, giving them renewed confidence that they will be able to defeat Tusk's coalition in the 2027 parliamentary elections.

Nawrocki supports traditional Catholic and family values ??and is a strong supporter of Polish sovereignty within the EU./ CNA
