US sends Iran nuclear deal proposal

The United States has sent Iran a nuclear deal proposal, which the White House said is "acceptable" and is "in Tehran's best interest" to accept, US media reported on June 1.

Reports of this proposal come after a United Nations report that said the Islamic Republic has increased its uranium enrichment production to high levels.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he had been presented with "elements of a US proposal" by his Omani counterpart during his visit to Tehran on Saturday.

“[US envoy Steve] Witkoff has sent a detailed and acceptable proposal to the Iranian regime, and it is in their best interest that they accept it,” White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said, the New York Times reported.

The proposal has been described as a series of key points, rather than a complete draft, according to the New York Times, which cited officials familiar with the diplomatic exchange.

The proposal calls on Iran to halt all uranium enrichment and proposes the creation of a regional group to produce nuclear energy, a group that includes Iran, Saudi Arabia and other Arab states, as well as the United States.

Iran has held five rounds of talks with the US in search of a new agreement that would replace the nuclear deal with world powers, from which US President Donald Trump withdrew during his first presidential term in 2018.

Araghchi said on Saturday that Iran considers nuclear weapons "unacceptable."

He made these statements a day after Trump said that Iran "cannot have nuclear weapons," while expressing his hope that an agreement would be reached soon./ REL
