Dozens of people poisoned by salmonella-tainted cucumbers in the US

Foreign media reports that dozens of people in 18 countries have been poisoned by salmonella-tainted cucumbers. 

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that at least 16 people have been hospitalized after eating cucumbers produced by Florida-based Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales. The cucumbers were sold from April 29 to May 19.

The CDC says there are reports of sick people aboard six different cruise ships that departed from US ports between late March and mid-April.

According to officials, the number of sick people is probably much higher and the outbreak could affect other countries.

Several companies have issued recalls for pickles used in sandwiches, dips and other foods containing salmonella. Target recalled dozens of products.

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, dehydration and stomach pain. Most people who get sick recover within a week. Infections can be severe in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, who may need hospitalization./ CNA
