Ukraine-Russia talks/ Turkey proposes organizing a summit with the

Turkey has proposed hosting a summit with the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and the United States as it tries to broker a hard-fought deal to end Russia's three-year occupation. Moscow said it was sending a team of negotiators to Istanbul for a second round of direct talks with Ukraine on June 2, although Kiev has yet to confirm whether it will attend.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has forged warm relations with both Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, becoming a key mediator in Donald Trump's efforts for a deal to end the more than three-year war.

"We sincerely think that it is possible to conclude the first and second direct talks in Istanbul with a meeting between Mr. Trump, Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky, under the leadership of Mr. Erdogan. We can either close our eyes to the continuation of this war or achieve a lasting peace before the end of the year. Expectations for a ceasefire and peace have increased," Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during a visit to Kiev on May 30.

In response, the Kremlin said Putin would only consider the proposed summit if negotiations with Kiev yielded results.

At talks in Istanbul on May 16, the first in more than three years, the sides agreed to exchange documents outlining possible roadmaps towards peace. /CNA
