Trial in Argentina over death of football legend Maradona canceled

A court in Argentina has annulled the trial of seven health workers accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona, calling it a “mistrial.” The decision comes after one of the three judges resigned amid criticism over her appearance in an upcoming documentary about the case.

Julieta Macindah's resignation forces the court to either appoint a new judge to replace her or retry the entire case from the beginning. On Thursday, the judges decided to retry the case, without specifying when it will begin.

Judge Macindach said she had no choice but to recuse herself from the case. A video that was released showed the judge giving an interview for the documentary inside the Buenos Aires courthouse and in her office, which constitutes a breach of ethics.

The trial had begun on March 11. Maradona died on November 25, 2020, in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, a few days after undergoing surgery for a hematoma on his head./CNA
