Israel says it has killed Hamas leader

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on May 28 that his army had killed Mohammed Sinwar, the alleged leader of Hamas — the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union — in Gaza. He is the brother of the group's slain leader, Yahya Sinwar.

"In the 600 days of the 'Renaissance War,' we have truly changed the face of the Middle East," Netanyahu told parliament.

"We have removed terrorists from the territory, we have entered the Gaza Strip by force, we have eliminated tens of thousands of terrorists, we have eliminated Mohammed Sinwar."

Israeli media had reported that Sinwar was killed during Israeli airstrikes on the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis on May 13.

At the time, the Israeli military said it had carried out "a precision strike on Hamas terrorists in a command and control center located in an underground infrastructure beneath the European hospital in Khan Yunis."

Sinwar's older brother, Yahya, has been accused by Israel of being the architect of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza. He was killed in southern Gaza in October 2024.

Experts have said that Mohammed Sinwar likely took over leadership of Hamas' armed wing, known as the al-Qassam Brigades, after the wing's leader, Mohammed Deif, was killed.

The attack on October 7, 2023, killed nearly 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and Hamas took 251 hostages. Hamas members are still holding dozens of hostages, while many others have been released under ceasefire and other agreements.

Israel's retaliatory offensive, which has devastated large parts of Gaza, has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and fighters in its calculations.

After the assassination of several Hamas leaders since October 7, Mohammed Sinwar was considered to be the main decision-maker in indirect negotiations with Israel, on the hostage issue and the management of Hamas' armed wing.

Hamas has yet to confirm or deny Israel's claim of killing Sinwar./ Rel
